Ommegang’s Latest ‘Game of Thrones’ Beer Honors the Mother of Dragons

Ommegang just announced its latest Game of Thrones beer, a Westeros-themed beer modeled after the Mother of Dragons.

The brewery is releasing four Game of Thrones-inspired brews by the end of the year, each one focused on a different character that's currently battling for the Iron Throne. Inspired by Daenerys Targaryen, the beer is a blend of a smoked porter and a Belgian kriek, a mixture Ommegang says "represents the smoke and fire that Daenerys has unleashed on her opponents during her ascent to conquer and rule the seven kingdoms."

"Mother of Dragons represents in beer one of our favorite characters from Game of Thrones. Daenerys's ascent from obscurity has been one of the most inspiring storylines of the show, and we're thrilled to release a blend that embodies the character traits that have underpinned that rise," Doug Campbell, Brewery Ommegang president said in a statement.

As for how it tastes, the brewery says it has "aromas of chocolate covered cherries" that "intertwine with subtle smoke and roasted malt" and "the flavor is rich with tart cherry up front leading to a center palate of semi-sweet chocolate resolving to subtle smoke and mild sweetness."

The Game of Thrones series of beers started in April with the release of Hand of the Queen, a barleywine. That was followed in June with the release of Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, a sour blonde blend. The final beer in the series will be announced later this year.

Mother of Dragons will be available on September 28 in 750 ml bottles for a suggested retail price of $12.99.

Thai Boys Rescued From Cave Address the World After Being Released From the Hospital

The Thai boys who captured the world’s heart during their perilous rescue from Tham Luang Cave in northern Thailand have been released from the hospital.

The 12 soccer players and their coach, Ekkapol Chantawong, addressed the press at a news conference Wednesday. The Wild Boars team entered to cheers, dressed in their team attire and dribbling soccer balls.

Throughout the conference, the boys stressed that they were very sorry for the ordeal, the New York Times reports. The boys said they hadn’t told their parents they were going adventuring in the cave, fearing they wouldn’t be given permission, instead saying it was a regular soccer practice.

“I would like to apologize to Dad and Mom,” said Phanumas Saengdee, 13, who said he secretly slipped a flashlight into his soccer bag for the cave exploration.

The boys and their coach survived in the cave for more than two weeks. At the press conference, they spoke of their experience and described their rescue as a miracle. With no food, the team “drank water that fell from the rocks,” one boy said. When they realized the floods were not subsiding after the first night, the boys tried to dig their way out of the cave using stones, CNN reports.

When the two British divers found the boys and their coach on July 2, nine days after becoming trapped, 14-year-old Adun Sam-On said, “We didn't know if it was real or not.”

“They got out of the water, and I was surprised they were not Thai. I didn't know what to say so I said, 'Hello,'” he continued. “It was a miracle.”

The boys were thankful to the Thai Navy SEALS and everyone who helped with their rescue. At the conference, they somberly presented a picture of 38-year-old former Navy SEAL diver Saman Kunan, who died during the cave rescue while placing oxygen canisters along the diver’s path. The boys had written thank you notes to the diver.

“Everyone was very sad,” Coach Ekkapol said, according to Al Jazeera. “They felt like they were the reason he had to die and his family had to suffer.”

Lt. Col. Phak Lohanchun, an army doctor and diver involved with the rescue, said in a Facebook post that he was impressed with the boys’ behavior throughout the ordeal, the Times reports.

“Every boy on the Wild Boar team fully understands the sacrifice everyone went through searching for them,” he said. “I have confidence that the Wild Boar boys will grow into great humans for this country, and be valuable and prominent in Thailand.”

Instagram Might Let Public Accounts Remove Followers Soon

It looks like Instagram is testing a new feature that would allow public accounts to remove followers.

A spokesperson for Instagram confirmed to Fortune that it is testing the feature, but said they had no further information to share at this time. It’s unclear if the new ability will roll out to all users, or when.

The ability to remove a follower now means that you don’t have to outright block someone while still giving added privacy, short of making the entire account private.

In order to see if you have the feature, you can go to your Instagram profile, tap followers, then click the three dot icon next to whichever follower you want to remove. The three dots won’t appear if you don’t have the ability to remove followers. If you do, you can tap the icon to bring up the option to remove the follower.

Instagram has been experimenting with allowing users to control how they interact with followers by adding features like “muting,” which means posts from a certain follower won’t appear for a while without unfollowing or blocking them.

Ford Recalls 550,000 Escape and Fusion Vehicles Over Rollaway Concerns

Ford has issued a recall of 550,000 Fusion and Escape vehicles over rollaway concerns.

The recall specifically applies to the 2013-2016 Ford Fusion and 2013-2014 Ford Escape and stems from a problem with a part connected to the vehicle's transmission where a bushing responsible for holding the car's shifter cable in place might detach, Ford says. The result can be an issue where the car is in a different gear than the driver thinks it is. For instance, the car might register as being in Park, when it's actually in neutral.

Ford says it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the problem.

Drivers who own one of the recalled Ford vehicles can have the shifter cable bushing replaced at the dealership, which will correct the issue. Until that replacement happens, Ford suggests that drivers' use the parking brake whenever they park their vehicle to ensure it does not move unintentionally.

Bruce Springsteen’s Broadway Show Is Heading to Netflix

Bruce Springsteen’s one-man Broadway show is making its way from the stage to the small screen.

The Tony award-winning “Springsteen on Broadway” will drop as a Netflix special on Dec. 15, the same day the musical ends its two-year run at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

“We are thrilled to bring Bruce Springsteen -- a master storyteller, humanitarian and voice of the everyman -- to Netflix in this historic one-man show,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos told Rolling Stone. “This groundbreaking experience defies the boundaries of theater, concerts and film and will give our global audience an intimate look at one of the biggest cultural icons of our time.”

At the time of its initial premiere in October 2016, the iconic rocker’s show was only meant to run for six weeks. After garnering rave reviews from critics and turning out a consistent audience, Springsteen extended the show by 10 more weeks. In March, he announced plans to prolong his stay on Broadway to December of this year, totaling an impressive run of 236 shows. According to the New York Times, “Springsteen on Broadway” has grossed $76 million and has been seen by more than 151,000 people.

If Springsteen wins an Emmy award for the Netflix special, he will be one of only a dozen coveted EGOT recipients to take home an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and a Tony.

Why Smaller Satellites and Cheaper Tech Are Fueling The Space Boom

You can thank smaller satellites and cheaper technologies for helping contribute to the current space market.

During a panel on the space industry on Wednesday during Fortune's Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, Colo., Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart said "small satellites are now a really major mover in the industry."

Although satellites used to be the size of buses or cars, they now can be as small as a washing machine or refrigerator, Hart explained.

Now, companies appear to be sending more of these smaller satellites, armed with sensors, in space to carry out feats like capturing imagery of the Earth, monitoring greenhouse gasses, or tracking the movements of shipping vessels cruising the world's seas, said Howard Lance the CEO of space technology company Maxar Technologies.

Hart said that Virgin Orbit, part of Richard Branson's Virgin Group, is building "a small satellite launcher" that's hooked onto a Boeing 747 aircraft. A successful launch from this mechanism would be akin to the "holy grail" of space launches, because it would be similar to more conventional "aircraft-like launches," he said.

He also shared what was it like when Branson first approached him about leading Virgin Orbit:

"There was no answer but yes," Hart said. "My blood was just pumping."

One of the pitfalls of sending so many smaller satellites to space, however, is that there's now more of a chance that accidents could occur in Earth's low orbit. Lance believes that the U.S. and other international governments need to work together to address the potential of the skies filling up with too much space junk.

"We've had our satellites in orbit get damaged," said Lance. "It's only going to get worse before it gets better."

One way Maxar is dealing with damaged satellites, Lance noted, is by sending a customized satellite into low orbit that could help repair or refuel other satellites.

"We're funding right now a special satellite that will be able to assemble other satellites in orbit," Lance said.

Match Group CEO: Facebook Is No Threat to Us

Mindy Ginsberg has had an interesting first year as CEO of Match Group, the $11 billion dating empire which owns Tinder, OkCupid, and Match.com, and a handful of other sites.

In March, her second month as CEO, the company filed a patent infringement lawsuit in a district court in Texas, alleging that competitor Bumble infringed on two Tinder patents, one of which involves the "swipe" technology that Tinder has made famous. Bumble counter-sued, triggering a very public battle between the two companies.

Then, in May, Facebook announced that it was entering the dating marketplace, triggering a 20% one-day drop in Match Group's share price.

"Are you suggesting that drama follows me?" she asked, drawing guffaws at Fortune's Brain Storm TECH conference in Aspen, Colo.

Ginsberg recalled the moment she learned that a new competitor had entered the dating arena. She had just finished preparing remarks for an earnings call, when her phone began blowing up with the news. "The stock started dropping a dollar a minute," she recalled. "I just threw all [my prepared remarks] away and started over."

Despite the market's response, Ginsberg remains sanguine about the development.

Ginsberg feels confident that the mostly young love-seekers, who use the now five-year-old Tinder, don't want to be dating on the same platform where their parents hang out. Until last year, Tinder users signed up through Facebook Connect. But in 2017, the company launched an option to sign up via text. "Seventy five percent of people used the text option, opting to separate their Facebook life from their dating life," she says.

Also, Ginsberg says, serious daters know this is a volume game. "When you really want to get out there and meet someone, you're usually on more than one [app], usually three," she says. Facebook has always been an implicit dating site, re-connecting old sweethearts and allowing friends of friends to meet. "While I'd never underestimate Facebook, we focus on just one thing."

And that one thing means deeply studying the behaviors of people who use the sites, and responding to whom they actually respond to, not necessarily who they say they’re looking for. Some 20 years ago, she says, she went looking for love online. “When I was online dating I thought I wanted to meet a tall Jewish guy, but I ended up marrying a short Indian guy,” she says. “You just never know.”

There Are 3 Winning $1 Million Mega Millions Tickets. Here’s Where They Were Sold

Tuesday’s Mega Millions numbers drawing failed to yield a jackpot-winning ticket, pushing the prize from $375 million to $422 million.

However, the drawing did result in three $1 million dollar winners -- meaning five numbers matched the drawing, but the Mega Ball number didn’t. The winning Mega Millions numbers for July 17, 2018, were 40, 41, 61, 66, and 67, with Mega Ball number 12.

The $1 million tickets were sold in New Jersey, Florida, and Oklahoma. In New Jersey, the winning ticket was sold in Ocean County at a 7-Eleven store in Pine Beach along Route 9, according to NJ.com. In Oklahoma, the winning ticket was sold at Chisholm Corner in Marlow, Oklahoma, according to the Duncan Banner. The Florida location, according to the Florida Lottery was Publix on South Flamingo Road in Cooper City.

Overall, 44 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington, D.C., participate in the Mega Millions lottery, which has drawings on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Friday’s Mega Millions drawing is for $422 million -- the sixth-largest Mega Millions jackpot.

Uranium Could Be Next on Trump’s List of New Tariffs

The U.S. Department of Commerce is launching an investigation into whether uranium imports threaten national security, potentially laying the groundwork for new tariffs against the chemical element necessary for nuclear power production.

“Our production of uranium necessary for military and electric power has dropped from 49% of our consumption to 5%,” said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in a statement Wednesday. “The Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security will conduct a thorough, fair, and transparent review to determine whether uranium imports threaten to impair national security.”

The investigation will address all aspects of the uranium industry, including mining, enrichment, defense, and industrial consumption.

Two American uranium producers, Energy Fuels and Ur-Energy, petitioned the government to launch this investigation back in January, citing concerns over the amount of foreign state-subsidized uranium being imported.

“Despite uranium's critical role in supporting clean electricity and national defense, imports of cheap, foreign state-subsidized uranium have swelled in recent years to the point that domestic suppliers currently provide less than 5% of our nation's demand,” they said in a statement.

According to these companies, “the combined uranium imports from three geopolitically and commercially linked countries - Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan - fulfilled nearly 40% of U.S. requirements” in 2016, and China has increased their own nuclear power production in recent years as well, threatening U.S. markets.

The World Nuclear Association states that just 7% of the uranium delivered to U.S. nuclear power plants last year was sourced from American companies. Canada was the largest individual foreign supplier, producing 35% of uranium purchases by U.S. plants.

According to CNBC, a 1962 law allows the president to tax imports if they’re considered a threat to national security. Tariffs on uranium could raise costs in the nuclear energy sector, which is already struggling from competition with natural gas and renewable energy. The Department of Commerce states that 20% of the U.S. electric grid is powered by nuclear energy.

They’re Not ‘Intentionally Getting It Wrong.’ Mark Zuckerberg Says He Won’t Ban Holocaust Deniers

Facebook, which has come under fire a number of times now over “fake news,” conspiracy theories, and offensive content posted on its platform, has traditionally opted for a hands-off approach to deal with problematic content. Now, founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is reinforcing that mentality, explaining why he won’t ban Holocaust deniers on Facebook.

“Let's take this a little closer to home,” Zuckerberg said in an interview with Recode. “So I'm Jewish, and there's a set of people who deny that the Holocaust happened. I find that deeply offensive. But at the end of the day, I don't believe that our platform should take that down because I think there are things that different people get wrong -- I don't think that they're intentionally getting it wrong. It's hard to impugn intent and to understand the intent.”

Very recently Zuckerberg was criticized for not banning InfoWars, which is known for spreading conspiracy theories and claiming mass shootings, like the Sandy Hook school shooting, are hoaxes. Facebook’s solution in that case, and similar ones, has been to deprioritize its posts in the News Feed.

Thomas Friedman: We’re in the Middle of 3 Climate Changes — Not Just 1

Contrary to popular belief, New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Thomas Friedman believes we’re in the midst of not just one climate change, but three.

Speaking at Fortune‘s annual Brainstorm Tech conference, this year in Aspen, Colo., Friedman laid out his view on the profound changes the world is experiencing, and only one was environmental. The other two, he said, are the climate of globalization, and the climate of technology.

“We’re going from a world that was interconnected, to a world that was interdependent,” Friedman said Wednesday in conversation with Fortune President Alan Murray. “That’s a very different world.”

He added that even though countries like Greece and Italy are allies in North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union, if their “banks had gone under last night, this room would be half full. In an interdependent world, they can kill us.”

Friedman said this concept also applies to rivals of the United States. But rather than worrying about a rival’s rise, he said, the real concern is a rival’s fall.

“If China had taken six more islands in the South China Sea last night, personally -- don’t tell anybody -- couldn’t care less,” he said. “Had China lost six percent growth last night? This room would be empty.”

The climate of technology is also causing a major change in our society, Friedman added.

“Machines today are acquiring all the attributes of human beings: the ability to think, reason, manipulate and learn,” Friedman said. “No member of our species, the human species, has ever lived in a world where machines could think, learn, analyze and manipulate the way they are today.”

Friedman said that in the midst of climate change, species need resilience to weather the storm, but also propulsion to power through it.

“It’s not the strongest that survive, it’s not the smartest that survive, it’s the most adaptive that survive,” he explained. “We are in the middle of a giant adaptation challenge… at the individual level, at the community level, and at the corporate level.”

Friedman said most national governments are “too paralyzed by political tribalism” to adapt to the pace of change. The single family, meanwhile, is “too weak” to adapt, he said. So what can?

“I believe the right governing unit for the 21st century,” Friedman said, “is the healthy community.”

You Could Soon Get a Tax Break for Going to the Gym—But Should You?

On Thursday, the powerful House Ways and Means Committee advanced legislation that would let (some) Americans write off (certain) fitness expenses as a tax deduction. The bill, dubbed the Personal Health Investment Today, or PHIT Act, is enthusiastically backed by health care companies and nonprofits like Fitbit, the American Heart Association, Nike, the Sports and Fitness Association, and others; it passed through the committee on a bipartisan 28-7 vote.

If signed into law, the PHIT Act would amount to a tax break for gym memberships, fitness classes, and the purchase of certain “safety equipment” related to fitness (it’s unclear exactly what kind of equipment and activity would qualify under the legislation’s purview--although certain things like horseback riding and golfing wouldn’t pass muster). Just how much of a break might one get? Qualified expenses couldn’t exceed $500 for an individual or $1,000 for a joint household return.

It’s an open question whether or not the proposal will ultimately pass. But it’s already drawing some raised eyebrows from critics who say it would essentially benefit wealthy (and relatively healthy) people who already go to a gym or take fitness classes while doing little to incentivize the vast majority of Americans to exercise more.

Why is that? For one thing, the measures are centered around health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible savings accounts (FSAs)--financial tools that are ostensibly meant to pay for out-of-pocket medical costs and that many taxpayers don’t necessarily have access to.

But the deductions would also have to be itemized under the existing measure. For context, less than a third of all taxpaying households itemize, and they skew heavily toward the wealthiest Americans. And while preventive wellness programs have become a regular cottage industry in the public health sphere, the evidence supporting their overall effectiveness is, at this point, still decidedly mixed.

raceAhead: U.S. Army Surgeon General on Training Empathy

Short up-top today, I’m taking a day or so to process what I learned at Brainstorm TECH to fold into a longer piece. But I will say this: I came away from the event more optimistic about the world than I was going in.

Part of the reason is the serious brain power that I watched being applied to the big issues of our time, from cybersecurity to the need to address the current and potential negative impact of technology in the world.

But really, the big theme was leadership, and the need for leaders at every level to think more deeply about the impact of their work on the lives of others. It gave me both life and hope.

Here’s just one example. My panel on digital transformation featured Marc Leibowitz, Johnson & Johnson; Jeremy King, CTO, Walmart Labs; Christine Landry, Group Chief Executive, Consumer and Industrials Conduent; Cathy Polinsky, CTO, Stitch Fix and Lt. General Nadja Y. West, Surgeon General, U.S. Army. An audience member asked this question. What does it take for an organization to survive a radical digital transformation?

Their answers, which came without hesitation, were transparency, openness, communication and adaptability.

But Lt. General West, an extraordinary person who is tasked with the transformation of the way the military dispenses medical care, led with empathy. She talked about the need to understand how the systems and technologies now and in future, not only impact your customers, but the broader communities in which you operate.

“If we can train empathy, we can make almost any change happen.”

More on that soon.

Are We Sitting on Diamonds? A New Study Says a Quadrillion Tons May Be Under Earth’s Surface

There may be a quadrillion tons of diamonds under the Earth’s surface, according to study conducted by an international team of scientists and published Monday in the journal Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems.

But don’t get your hopes up on mining them: According to the study, the deposits are located in “cratonic roots” between 90 and 150 miles below the Earth’s surface (much further than any drill has gone).

“This shows that diamond is not perhaps this exotic mineral, but on the [geological] scale of things, it's relatively common," Ulrich Faul, a co-author of the study and research scientist in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, told MIT News. “We can't get at them, but still, there is much more diamond there than we have ever thought before.”

But what is a “cratonic root”? MIT News describes cratons as “the oldest and most immovable sections of rock that lie beneath the center of most continental tectonic plates.” These stable chunks of the Earth’s crust are shaped like “inverted mountains.” The deepest parts of cratons are known as their “roots” and can reach all the way to the Earth’s mantle. It is here where the study’s authors believe that diamonds are.

But if they are over 100 miles below the Earth’s surface, how did scientists find them? The answer comes from seismic data--or recorded sound waves from seismic activity like earthquakes and tsunamis.

Seismic data can be used to measure what the Earth is made of, because the speed of sound waves changes depending on the temperature, density and composition of the earth they travel through.

In looking at the seismic data, scientists realized there was an issue--sound waves were moving through cratonic roots “faster than what we think we can reproduce with reasonable assumptions about what is there,” Faul told MIT News.

So using 3D modeling to create virtual rocks, scientists set out to figure out what substances could compose the roots of cratons, allowing sound to pass through that that speed. Diamonds fit the bill, and to match the velocity of the sound traveling through the roots, the scientists estimated that the roots must be made of 1 to 2% diamond (in addition to peridotite and eclogite).

Using that estimate, and the number of known craton roots, the scientists arrived at their quadrillion ton estimate -- 1,000 times more than originally thought, according to CNN.

Diamonds are created under high-temperature, high-pressure scenarios and make their way to the surface through volcanic activity.

The researchers involved were from the University of California, Santa Barbara, the University of California, Berkeley, the Ecole Polytechnique, the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, the Carnegie Institution of Washington, Harvard University, the University of Science and Technology of China, the University of Bayreuth, the University of Melbourne, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and University College London.

Tech Has Opportunity in Europe’s Silicon Union, Industry Insiders Say

Silicon Valley and China are widely recognized as the natural habit of the tech unicorn. In Europe, the species is rare, but that may be changing, according to a panel of leading investors, entrepreneurs and venture experts at Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech.

Tech experts including Message Bird CEO Robert Vis, Adyen’s North America president Kamran Zaki, Business France chairman Pascal Cagni, and IDA Ireland head of technology Donal Travers acknowledged that Europe has long suffered from the perception that its markets are fragmented and over-regulated--as well as governed by officials who treat entrepreneurs with disdain. But the group concurred that Europe is gradually eliminating long-standing impediments to entrepreneurs. In recent years, many said, the benefits of launching in Europe have begun to outweigh the drawbacks.

Cagni argued soaring valuations in Silicon Valley make Europe a more attractive destination than ever for global venture investors. "Europe is cheap, incredibly cheap,” he said.

Kamran Zaki, North American president for Amsterdam-based payments processor Adyen, credited the firm’s European roots for its success. "Payments is a global business,” he said. “For us, starting from Europe was a positive because we had to be global from Day One."

Entrepreneurs have long complained that venture funding is harder to come by in Europe than in Silicon Valley or China. But several panelists disputed that stereotype. Message Bird’s Robert Vis argued capital is readily available for European ventures able to demonstrate financial success. "I don't think capital is an issue,” he said. “I think early stage investment is an issue…. In the US ideas get funded. In Europe, traction gets funded.”

A recent CB Insights ranking found that, out of 260 global unicorns, only 23 were based in Europe. A 2017 report based on joint research by Deloitte and China Venture found that of 252 non-listed startups with a valuation of over $1 billion, 106 firms were based in the U.S. and 98 based in China.

Europe’s standout startup is Spotify. The Swedish venture’s April IPO, valued the company at nearly $30 billion, making it Europe’s most highly valued tech company. But Adyen is among Europe’s startup success stories. The company, founded in 2006, processed $122 billion in payments last year. Ayden floated shares on the Amsterdam exchange in June in a deal that valued the company at about $8 billion.

Panelists agreed that fragmentation and culture still pose daunting challenges for European startups. “Just try to operate an e-commerce startup up in Europe and deal with the VAT and you'll shoot yourself," said Maelle Gavet, chief operating officer at Compass, who added that, “in many places in Europe, ‘entrepreneur’ is still a dirty word.”

Panelists also expressed concern that Brexit would create new obstacles for startups in the United Kingdom, which has long been a magnet for entrepreneurs from outside Europe. “London has been a pretty good place for people to congregate,” he said Hiro Tamura, partner at London-based venture capital firm Atomica. “The talent piece is what I worry about a lot."

‘I Personally Find Holocaust Denial Deeply Offensive.’ Mark Zuckerberg Clarifies His Controversial Comments

Mark Zuckerberg has clarified his controversial comments on why Facebook won’t ban Holocaust deniers. Sort of.

To recap, in an interview that published Wednesday morning, the Facebook CEO sat down with Recode‘s Kara Swisher, who at one point asked why the social network won’t take down accounts like Infowars that publish patently false conspiracy theories.

In his answer, Zuckerberg, who is Jewish, said he found Holocaust deniers “deeply offensive.” Then he said, “but at the end of the day, I don't believe that our platform should take that down because I think there are things that different people get wrong--I don't think that they're intentionally getting it wrong. It's hard to impugn intent and to understand the intent."

What happened next was predictable to everyone but Zuckerberg: The Internet blew up.

Zuckerberg then sent Recode a follow-up email that began, “I personally find Holocaust denial deeply offensive, and I absolutely didn't intend to defend the intent of people who deny that.”

Zuckerberg then reiterated a distinction he tried to draw in the interview: Posts that advocate violence will be taken down, but those that peddle misinformation will stay but “would lose the vast majority of its distribution in News Feed,” he said in the email.

Whether you agree that trusting Holocaust deniers to just be misguided or misinformed is wise, it’s clear that the now-clarified but still-controversial quote is just the latest move by Facebook that has drawn criticism.

Yesterday, Channel 4 revealed that a Facebook moderator training manual said “a cartoon comment which describes drowning a girl if her first boyfriend is a negro [was] content which is permitted.” Meanwhile, mainstream publications criticized the company for being overly accommodative to far-right publications. In May, Zuckerberg met with conservatives who felt the social network wasn’t friendly enough to them.

This story has been edited since publication, updating the headline.

Trump’s Military Parade Will Cost Taxpayers About $12 Million, Report Says

The military parade that President Trump asked the Pentagon to organize for him is likely to cost about $12 million, CNN reported, citing three US defense officials.

The officials said that the $12 million number is “a planning figure,” noting that the final figure could be different as plans for the event unfold. The parade is scheduled to take place in time to celebrate Veterans Day this November.

Earlier reports suggested that the parade will highlight the role of women in the military and the contributions of veterans from the Revolutionary War until today. It will not include tanks, which could damage the capitol’s infrastructure.

The news left some people on Twitter imagining how that money could be better spent.

Trump has been wishing to stage a military parade in Washington ever since visiting France last year, where he attended Bastille Day celebrations and was feted with a military parade along the Champs-?lys?es and dinner at the Eiffel Tower. He later tasked the Pentagon with planning a parade of his own.

Tariffs Eat Away at Profits for Alcoa, America’s Largest Aluminum Maker

U.S. aluminum tariffs that were meant to protect the industry from foreign competitors are instead taking a bite out of the earnings of the nation's largest producer.

Alcoa Corp. lowered its 2018 profit projection as tariffs on imported aluminum present what Chief Executive Officer Roy Harvey is calling a "significant" headwind. The manufacturer has been hit with $15 million so far on material it produced mostly in Canada and shipped to the U.S. The company also cited higher energy costs and lower aluminum prices for the cut.

The forecast adds to concerns for commodity investors over the potential impact of the tariffs, with metal prices and producer shares languishing amid growing concern that a trade war could hamper economic growth. Harvey zeroed in on the levies slapped on shipments from Canada, where Alcoa was expected to make 28 percent of its primary aluminum this year, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.

"Everyone assumed as did we that there would be an exception in place for Canadian production, so that has turned out not to be the case and that is a pretty significant impact for us," Harvey said in a phone interview.

Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization is forecast to be $3 billion to $3.2 billion, down from a previous estimate of $3.5 billion to $3.7 billion, Alcoa said in a statement Wednesday.

Harvey said that while demand remains robust, there are concerns that industrial customers could eventually move operations outside of the U.S. so they can buy metal that's not subject to the duties.

At the same time, the Pittsburgh-based manufacturer reported higher-than-expected sales and earnings for the second quarter.

"Uncertainty continues to exist in the global supply chain due to U.S. tariffs and ongoing alumina supply disruptions in the Atlantic region," the company said in the statement.

Aluminum has slipped about 25 percent from an almost seven-year high reached in April in the wake of U.S. sanctions on Russian producer United Co. Rusal.

Alcoa fell 0.9 percent at 7:10 p.m. after the close of regular trading in New York. The shares declined 11 percent this year through the close. Century Aluminum Co., the second-biggest U.S. producer, fell 1.6 percent in late trading.

The company also said it sees a deeper global production shortage in the metal this year as it pared its outlook for excess supply coming out of China.

Demand will exceed supply by 1.1 million to 1.5 million metric tons, Alcoa said Wednesday in its earnings presentation. That compares with an April forecast for a deficit of 600,000 to 1 million tons.

Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook won't ban Holocaust deniers because it wants to give people 'a voice' (FB)

Fashion Discussion: Nigerian Swimwear Brand BFyne Is Accusing Designer Silvia Ulson of Plagiarizing Their Designs

The post Fashion Discussion: Nigerian Swimwear Brand BFyne Is Accusing Designer Silvia Ulson of Plagiarizing Their Designs appeared first on Fashion Bomb Daily Style Magazine: Celebrity Fashion, Fashion News, What To Wear, Runway Show Reviews.

The popular swimwear brand B Fyne known for their unique designs has accused fashion designer Silvia Ulson of plagiarizing their 2017 Sahara collection inspired by the brand’s Nigerian culture. There is certainly a striking resemblance between Silvia Ulson’s collection and B Fyne’s including the sexy cutouts and bold dashiki printed swimsuits.

A B Fyne rep expressed that the team was “flabbergasted.” “It came to us as a complete surprise how another designer is allowed to showcase replicas and claim it as her work during Miami Swim Week,” Bfyne’s rep said.

There is usually a very thin line between being inspired by a designer and blatantly copying their designs. In this case it seems like Ms. Ulson has some explaining to do. When we shared this discussion on our Instagram readers had a lot to say. @_wherebklynat said, “Not only did they literally copy/paste the designs, but they also took a whole culture and plastered another on top just because they didn’t want to take the time to research. Beyond disrespectful to the designer and both cultures.” Agreed!

What do you think?
